Main modifications from OHSAS 18001

Broadly speaking, much of OHSAS 18001 ‘s improvements to ISO 45001 can be grouped in a few groups. The first is the political governance of OH&S.

The role of OH&S administration in the strategic development phase of an enterprise is significantly improved with the current model. Additionally, leadership is more closely outlined in order to support the systems that contribute to the OH&S management of an organization. Clause 5 has been introduced, specifying unique roles to support health and safety within organizations for those in leadership positions.

Under Clause 5, the sole liability for the control structure and its success rests with top management. They are responsible for incorporating the management system with certain business systems, maintaining the adequacy of resources dedicated to the management system and health and safety systems, and communicating the value of and enforcement with the OHSMS. Specifications may be assigned in the norm but essentially top management is accountable for the implementation of the specifications.

The ISO 45001 standard extends proactivity to ensure the health and welfare not just of the staff but also of all parties concerned. Such programs would be compatible within the company framework which may involve threat recognition, risk management, procedures for emergency response, organizational controls, and/or testing and measurements. As before, the standard stresses the ongoing development of the management structure and the efficiency of OH&S.

The current standard, which incorporates criteria for a contact plan underlining all fields, has made both internal and external correspondence more important. In order to meet the goal of minimizing and avoiding injuries in the workforce, the efficacy and reliability of a health & safety management program are critical.
